christmas lessons 2013...

This was a difficult Christmas for me.
With all the materialistic images of what "Christmas" is suppose to be about, it makes it that much harder for a lot of people who are really struggling this year, like me.

There was no tree, no lights, no presents for everyone piled up awaiting the moment everyone would come over. The joy of seeing the wrapping paper flying while the smell of Christmas breakfast filled the house.

No, this year was much different.
I had no presents for anyone and the closer Christmas got, I couldn't even muster enough creativity to make anything.

Except one thing.
Every year I make all kinds of fudge and this year my son and his step-daughter wanted to learn how.

So with a mini two burner electric stove, we all made fudge!

half plain and half coconut fudge:
 white and chocolate peppermint fudge:
 half Reese's peanut butter chip
 half Heath bar chip fudge:

So a new tradition gets passed on.

We had our Christmas Breakfast at my oldest son's house. I made regular and gluten free bacon cheddar drop biscuits while he made a ham and egg scramble from just laid eggs out of the chicken coup!

I got a winter coat from my youngest that I REALLY needed AND his girlfriend gave me a gift certificate for a spa day! She said I needed a day of pampering. Isn't that sweet?

Then my oldest son's girlfriend gave me a clip on light for my art table so I can see what I am making, uh-oh:)

The best presents were to have my boys, their girlfriends, the precious 5 year old princess, my Beautiful Baby Girl and My Sissy in my life!

What I learned this Christmas:
No amount of money, presents, or lights on the tree can replace the gift of true love of the people in my life.

I learned to receive without having to give, and be okay with that.

I learned that the people around me love me for who I am, not what I can do or give.

And even though I feel like a mess, others see the love and beauty in me.

It was an awesome Christmas!

How was your Holiday?
I'd love to hear all about it.

strokes, tia's, complex migraines and comparing colored pencils...

I am happy to be back in blogland again!

I was admitted to the hospital once again.
It's been twice in three weeks and both times I was admitted was for what looked like a stroke.
My left side of my face was drooping and not moving, there was left side weakness, I was confused, words were not coming out right, and I was scared.

It was more intense than the first episode that I was admitted for, and released with the diagnosis of a TIA (transient Ischemic Attack). Basically a mini stroke without bleeding.

This last hospitalization I was diagnosed with a Complex Migraine. What's interesting about this type of migraine is that it can mimic a stroke and can be with or without pain. I believe it is similar to the attack several years ago that the TV reporter Serene Branson had during a televised report she was doing. There's a great article written by Leigh Vinocur, MD FACEP on Doctor Oz's website.

Never, ever ignore any symptoms of a migraine, stroke or just not feeling right. It could be a serious condition that every minute could change the outcome. I highly recommend reading the article on Dr. Oz's site.

For me, there is no telling when or if I will have another episode. Even though my cholesterol and blood pressure are great, I will have to stay on a Lipitor-type medication and of course a baby aspirin every night :)

Okay, that was alot and if you made it this far, thank you and I hope it was educating.

Now for art!

This is my work space right now;
couch, an old wooded TV tray and a coffee table:

I am resting up and doing just some easy-peasy coloring.

I wanted to compare my Prismacolor pencils to my Woodless Progresso colored pencils.
I had a drawing that I did with my new Micron 03 pen on watercolor paper and decided to play.

First the Prismacolor:

These pencils have a very heavy, rich color however did not blend well or even on the watercolor paper.

I added some leaves with the same Micron pen and used the light green Progresso pencil to color the leaves:

The green came out much smoother and blended well on the rougher surface of the watercolor paper.

I continued adding more greens to the leaves and did a few more flowers with the Progresso colors:

In my opinion the Progresso woodless colored pencils worked much better. Also the Prismacolor pencils need a lot more sharpening than the Progresso woodless pencils, so the Progresso pencils will last longer and I really enjoyed the shading ability of them since there is no wood to get in the way.
The winner is Progresso!

Time to go finish this one up.

Hope you are having a Terrific Thursday!
And to all the WOYWWers, I miss you all and hope to come out to play soon :)

i'm back and it's woyww #234...

I'm so excited to be back out here in blogland, especially for WOYWW!!!
Today is "What's on your Workdesk/table/space/bed/floor Wednesday!

This fun event is hosted by the wonderful Julia Dunnit over at Stamping Ground.
Every Wednesday we get to show off our work areas and hop around to work areas of other creatives all over the world.
Anyone can join so to go visit Julia HERE and learn more.

Here is my art table this morning:

I've been playing with the drawings I did of flowers and dragonflies.
I paint each items with watercolors and add a layer of Golden's Soft Gel Medium in between each layer of paint.
First layer was the flowers, second was the background, then dragonflies...I love the effect of multiple layers of the gloss medium.

I'm also starting to do more of my paper towel art. It's been a while since I have done it. Considering I have a basket full of paper towels that were used to wipe/clean my brushes from other projects, I think I need to see what images are hiding in all those paper towels.

I am entering on of my paper towel paintings into the Incite2: Color Passions contest.
Her name is "Lost In Time":
That's it for me today!
Time to go out to Julia's and get my number of the day.

Have a Wonderful WOYWW!

one big scare, one small stroke and one week of gratitude...

A new path...
Once again.

I feel like these past two years continue to change the path of my life.
I have no idea why, I need to really have faith and continue putting one foot in front of the other.

It's been a week since I had a mild stroke(TIA)and spent two days in the hospital.
It all went so fast, getting to the hospital, all the tests and all the wonderful, professional, compassionate personnel at the hospital who genuinely cared about me!

I still get a little confused and can't find my words or sometimes cannot finish a sentence, although I was having those problems before, this even just made it a little harder.

My event happened in the early morning. I was heading to the bathroom and couldn't turn right...
I just kept going left. I fell and think I was knock out for a minute. Once I regained my senses, I was helped to the bathroom and realized something was wrong.

I was dizzy, couldn't speak right and was so grateful I was not alone.

I was told in ER within minutes that I was going to be admitted. The left side of my face was not responding properly along with the left side of my body.

I should be back to normal within a week or so. Much more lucky than others who have had a major stroke or not gotten to the hospital in time.

Please take a moment to look at the warning signs of a stroke and additional information HERE.
It's important and I had NONE of the stroke risk factors.
I have also learned that WOMEN have their own unique symptoms.

Today is the first day on the computer and everything is different. I have had to go much slower to think of what I am doing and how to do it.

Yesterday I took my new Micron Pens and drew over some dragonflies and flowers I had previously drawn on watercolor paper.

My new set

Micron .05 tracing

Micron .03 tracing

 Micron .01 tracing

I got to see the difference in the tip sizes of the pens and also work on my fine motor skills that I am having trouble with.
I did pretty good!

I have to show off my "Get Well Flowers" and a new vase. Pretty cool, huh?

Doing this post has not been physically or mentally easy. I know us bloggers can make it look so simple can't we?

I really, really encourage you to become aware of the risk factors and warning signs.
I was told in the hospital that there is a 3-4 hour window between the onset of a stroke to getting emergency treatment that may save your life or reduce the damage of a stroke. I'm extremely lucky in that my effects should only last a few weeks. I see my neurologist next week, YAY!!!

Here is another link to the National Stroke Association for more info HERE.

I would also like to thank spellchecker and Google in helping me write this post :)

All of you are so important and loved!
Please take the time to educate yourselves because you only have one brain in charge of all you do!

Hugs, Rasz

woo-hoo! it's what's on your workdesk wednesday #231...

Yes another Wednesday has rolled around way too fast for me. I can't complain though because Wednesdays are the day we get to show our work spaces and go around the world looking at other creative's work places too!

Today's post for me is not so much what I am working on as it is what I am getting ready to start.

The sewing table (aka kitchen table at one time) is all buttoned up and clean awaiting a project.

Next the ironing board/finished projects space is holding the tub of finished purses and box of flower clips to go up to the booth at Apple Hill Friday.

On top of the tub is a purse that needs to go in the mail today along with a couple flower pins to be mailed. So glad that the purse will have a great home.

There is also a bowl of scrappy roses and a cat toy? Really?

Now on to the "fun" stuff. Yes I have been shopping with my Sissy and my oldest son.

First trip out was with my Sissy. We had coupons and Michaels had a great sale!
We both got one of these organizers at 40% OFF!

I have so much to get organized into this awesome, rolling drawer unit!

We found these mugs that can be painted. I am going to try with my acrylics (after I Google it).
It was actually a child's project with the little paints and a horrible brush.
Oh and three stamps I have been looking for that were in one of the bins at the checkout line for only $1.50 each! Michaels certainly has a way to keep me buying all the way to the register.

My son got me my FIRST set of Micron pens!
YAY!!!
I will be using these to make some ATCs and ACEOs!
He also got me a new sharpie I needed along with a pack of blank ATC cards in three different types of paper.

So now my day is full with visiting other WOYWWers and organizing all my supplies into the new drawers.
Getting more organized here will be so much better.

Maybe next week will show before/after and even some projects finished!

Hope you have a Wonderful WOYWW week!

October 31, 2013

it's that wonderful, magical night...

If you look closely at the top left pumpkin, can you tell what is carved in?

If you guessed a dolphin jumping in the water, you're right.
That comes straight from the imagination of a very special little 5 year old girl!
Good job, right?

And I had to do a Orange and Black purse for this special occasion:

Happy Halloween,
All Hollows Eve,
and Blessed Samhain!

October 30, 2013

it's woyww #230...

Yes, another Wednesday has rolled around, too quickly I think since I missed last Wednesday and have no idea where it went or what I did.

I have to admit that I did tidy-up since I couldn't even find my art table buried under a pile of half-made purses, canvas and then found what I had already been working on.

And there is a look at my art table in all her glory!
In the back you can see a hot pink purse and a lime green purse ready for decorating and handles.

On the left are ear warmers, plaid material for flowers and a box of broken jewelry that my friend Lynda gave me from her store for me to use on purses or mixed media! I scored BIG TIME!
Oh and my bumper sticker from my daughter.
Looking to the right is the bowl of cloth flowers I need to put hair clips on along with a bag of old zippers to make zipper roses!
I have lots to keep me busy these next couple days.
That's it for me, short and sweet??

Don't know what's the big deal about Wednesdays or WOYWW is? Please visit our amazing hostess Julia over at Stamping Ground to find out more!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

October 29, 2013

i'm back and i got presents...

Have you ever had weeks that fly by so fast that you don't even know what happened or why?
Well that is how it has been since I got back from my Tahoe trip.

I have made some more purses which I will show later. First though I want to share some wonderful gifts I have gotten.

This is from my Sissy Lisa:
The necklace on the left is a mixture of different beads strung and twisted beautifully together.
The gorgeous necklace on the right is turquoise nuggets strung with brass seed beads.
Lisa makes the most awesome jewelry.

THEN, I got a package from my daughter!
Her and I were separated when she was 2-1/2 years old and I have not seen her since. She just turned 33 years old and we are talking every day.
Her and I are so much alike.
I feel the empty hole in my heart is finally filled with my baby girl back!

Here's what I saw once I got the packaging stuff and towel out of the way:

First this precious little baby faery; wings, diapers and binky with a cute little bow holding up her little baby hair.

Next was a photo album full of pictures!

A book she made me promise to read with a cute bookmark that cracked me up.
She also included this darling little pipe cleaner doll and a tiny change holder:

Yay! A bumper sticker with my favorite Dragon saying on it.
I think I will put this on my art table!

And last was a couple special little things she wanted to give me! I will treasure everything!

Yep, this is my beautiful baby girl!
I am so blessed to have my daughter and my sister back in my life.

I wanted to share my joy and love and beaming heart!

May you have blessings coming your way too.

Now it's time to go find my workspaces that are covered in complete chaos before tomorrow's WOYWW.

WOYWW #227...

Yes Wednesday has rolled around again and that means it's time to share our work spaces on What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday?
Find out more from out more from our lovely hostess Julia over at Stamping Ground HERE

I must be becoming a true WOYWWer as I am on vacation with my sister and her fiance in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California!

My Sissy and I have been creating here on the coffee table BUT before I show you both of our workspaces, here is the view we can look out at during playtime:

Absolutely breathtaking!

Now here is my space on the coffee table:

And yes that is tea and not coffee. I have to limit my coffee intake to one cup a day. I am almost over the withdraws!

The beginning of my drawing "girl behind the tree".
And I just splurged on a tin of new colored pencils:

Now onto Lisa's space:
As you can tell, she is making some beautiful jewelry out of stones, stone beads and a little silver and "bling".

Time to take a break, walk outside and breath!

The sounds of waves hitting the shore reminds me of the ocean.
The beach is only a few more steps below!

This is the condo we are staying in!
I don't want to leave!

Time to finish up playing for now.

Lisa finished two amazingly awesome necklace/earring sets:

I love the detail in the stones that makes every one of them unique.
Lisa definitely has an eye for color and putting it together!

My camera couldn't even come close to capturing the beauty in this piece.

I was more playing around laying on the loveseat, all propped up and coloring, talking and laughing. This is as far as I got:
All of this was yesterday afternoon. Since today we need to eat and start packing to go home after FOUR GLORIOUS DAYS filled with love, laughter, tears, talking and healing I feel like a brand new person with a brand new goal.

That will come in a later blog.

As for today, have a Wonderful WOYWW!!!

October 02, 2013

it's wednesday, and it's woyww #226...

Happy WOYWW #226!
This is the fun day of the week to post our work areas and take a peek into work desks, tables, areas, couches, floors all over the world where some of the most creative people create!

If you would like to learn more, please visit the amazing host of this Wednesday party, Julia, over at Stamping Ground!

I missed last week :(
So I will try to quickly catch up on what I have been up to.

First, here is my art table:

Hiding the mess and clutter is a lightweight, pre-made blue tote that I am doodling on. I was actually doing it laying on the couch although I thought it looked better on the art table for the picture.
Really I have so many little art spaces around here I just couldn't add one more.

Next are some purses I am getting ready for my friend's booth that she is letting me put them in for the Fall season! Yay!
And my favorite so far, besides my own, is the green one below:
Well that's it for me today!
I will be out visiting as many of you as I can.
I think I am going to do what others do, which is visit everyone that ends in the last number as mine, then the friends I have met through here and always anyone who leaves a comment...and if computer time today permits, more spaces!!!

Have a WONDERFUL WOYWW WEEK!!!
